Hal F. Schulte

Dr. Hal F. Schulte III, 70 of Conesus, New York passed away on Saturday June 29,
2019 at the Suzanne’s Comfort Care Home in Perry, New York.
He was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan on June 10, 1949, a son to Hal F. Schulte Jr. of
Bakersfield, CA, and the late Marian J. (Miller) Schulte.
Hal graduated from Ann Arbor Pioneer High School. He received his Bachelor of
Science and Master of Pharmacology degrees from the University of Michigan. He was
also a proud member of the U of M marching band, and a member of the Phi Gamma
Delta fraternity. He then earned his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan
State University and began his career as a large animal vet in Northern Wisconsin,
specializing in dairy cow medicine.
Hal, “Buck” to his family, then moved to upstate New York, working for Cornell
University and the state of New York for over 25 years. He specialized in helping dairy
farmers around the Western New York and Finger Lakes Region maintain herd health
and improve milk production quality control by instructing dairy farmers in current best
practices. Buck loved cows for their gentle, dependable nature – he was somewhat
leery of horses however.
He enjoyed deer hunting, fishing, golfing and camping. A man with a prodigious
vocabulary, Buck could always be counted on to use it to tell people precisely what he
thought. “Eschew obfuscation” was a motto he lived by. He believed in education and
indeed, the scientific method. He also supported native Americans, the environment, a
representative democracy and he hated bullies.
Buck was a proud man, and also a brave one. He coped with a multitude of physical
challenges, always responding to each with resilience and remarkably good grace. He
had an acceptance of the irony in life, and in the use of humor as a defense against
those ironies. He is missed.
He is survived by his father, 3 siblings: Jane (Frank) Wcislo of Crossville, TN., Nancy
(Tom) Esch of Bakersfield, CA., Roger (Carol) Schulte of Ann Arbor, MI. along with 3
nieces, 3 nephews and several cousins.
Along with his mother he is preceded in death by his wife: Jean (Alldredge) Schulte.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
