Campbell R. McCabe (“Mac”) age 88 of Rochester, NY passed away on September 10th, 2024
He was born on October 6, 1935, in Troy, NY. The son of the late Elwood W And Belva C. (Campbell) McCabe.
As a boy Campbell grew up in Troy and Gloversville, NY playing many sports. When he was in high school his family moved to Memphis Tennessee where he played basketball and baseball.
Campbell was fondly known to his family and friends as Dad, Grandpa, Popparoni, Great Papa, Mac, Cam, Big Brother and Uncle Cammy.
Campbell is a Navy veteran who served from 1953-1956. He was a 1960 graduate of Hartwick College in Oneonta, NY, where he played on the first collegiate soccer team at Hartwick. For many years he was involved in Hartwick’s Alumni Association. Campbell spent many years with his young family camping throughout the Northeastern US region. He also traveled to Europe on many occasions to visit his son Tom and travel throughout Europe. His sister Belva Lee and son Tim live in Georgia where he made many visits. His daughter Alison lives locally, so much time was spent with her and her family.
Campbell was employed for many years with Travelers Insurance Company starting in Albany, NY, transferred to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and then Rochester, NY. After retiring from Travelers, he was a Real Estate Agent then a bus driver for Saranac Lake, NY and then Rochester and Grand Island, NY area schools.
Campbell was a volunteer at Roswell Cancer Institute in Buffalo, NY for over 10 years. He was for many years a volunteer for “Camp Good Days and Special Times”, an organization for children with cancer. He was also a soccer coach and Troop Leader in the Boy Scouts of America. In the early 1990’s he went to Haiti twice with the Peace Corp. Even though he was constantly harassed by Buffalo Bills fans, he was an avid Miami Dolphins fan.
Campbell is survived by a daughter: Alison M. (David) Humberstone of Perry, NY, 2 sons: Thomas E (Sarah James) McCabe of London, England, Timothy J. (Karen) McCabe of Canton, Georgia, his companion: Barbara Fontana of Rochester, NY and Barbara's children: Victoria (Stephen) Fontana-Demirjian of Boston, MA, Lawrence (Danielle) Fontana of Rochester, NY, sister Belva Lee (John/”Jack”) Hawks of Powder Springs, GA, Grandchildren: Morgan (Neil) Skinner, Kirsten (James) Troiano, Madison (Logan) Mamer, Jacob Campbell Humberstone, Emma (Benjamin Knapp) Humberstone, 5 great grandchildren, ex-wife and mother of his children Ellen Zibbideo, along with many nieces, nephews and friends.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by his siblings: Eugene (Doris) McCabe, Loren (Nancy) McCabe and Raymond (Betty) McCabe.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Campbell will be laid to rest in the Western New York National Cemetery in Corfu, NY.
