Arthur Eugene Guthrie, age 84, of Perry, passed away on Monday July 25, 2016 at the Batavia VA Nursing Home in Batavia. Donating his body to the Anatomical Gift Program at the University of Buffalo.
Mr. Guthrie was born on June 21, 1932 in Lincoln, Nebraska a son of the late Rev. Arthur Raymond and Clara (Ringenburg) Guthrie.
Mr. Guthrie served with the US Navy during the Korean Conflict.
He attended the Perry Center School District #1 (Perry Center University) and graduated from Perry Central School class of 1951, he went onto Oswego State College and graduated with a major in Industrial Arts and Driver Education. He was a member of the Episolon Industrial Arts Honors Fraternity and was a past president of Delta Kappa Kappa. He completed his studies at SUNY colleges of Geneseo and Buffalo. Mr. Guthrie taught Industrial Arts (Technology) at Perry Central School for 35 years. He officiated section five football games for 35 years, and timed basketball and football games for many years.
Gene was a member of the Perry First United Methodist Church in Perry, Constellation Lodge #404 of the Free and Accepted Masons, Friends of the Perry Public Library, The Arts Council of Wyoming County, New York State and Wyoming County Retired Teachers Associations, Oswego Alumni Association, “Sawbills and Scooters” Duck Hunter’s Association, and a past member of the Silver Lake Country Club and Perry Area Chamber of Commerce.
He served as Town Councilman and Deputy Town Supervisor for 28 years under Supervisor’s Woody Kelly, Ross Roberts and Anne Humphrey. He volunteered for the Perry Garden Club to help maintain the N. Center St. triangle. He enjoyed duck hunting, working in his shop, making things of native wood for family and friends, spending time with family and friends. He was always ready to lend a helping hand and give encouragement to others.
Gene is survived by his wife of 56 years: Marjorie C. (Hodgins) Guthrie, son: Barry Raymond (Lisa Wu) Guthrie of Corfu, son-in-law: David Ferry of Naples, sister: Clarita Wilsey of Newark, brother-in-laws: Clifford (Linda) Hodgins of Vancouver, WA., Rev. Kenneth (Barbara) Hodgins of Jamestown, Wesley (Mary Joyce) Hodgins of Aniston, Al., sister-in-law: Gwen Hodgins of Shelby Township, MI, dear friends: Cindy (Dariel) Tarala-Draper, Jenifer, Bill, Devon and Tyler Wilson, Stacey Ethan, and Emma Beagle, Jimmy Becker, along with many nieces and nephews.
Along with his parents he is preceded in death by a daughter Dr. Anne Marie Guthrie, In-laws: Clair M. and Mamie (Hatling) Hodgins, nephew Peter Hodgins, brother-in-laws: Hugh Hodgins and Irving Wilsey.
Family and friends may call from 10-11am at the Perry First United Methodist Church 35 Covington St. in Perry on Tuesday August 9 where services will follow at 11am.
He will be laid to rest in Glenwood Cemetery in Perry.

The family would like to thank the staff at Wyoming County Home Care and Hospice, home health care aids: Sherri, Sarah, Lisa, Sandy and Michelle, Batavia VA home base primary care team, the DAV and VA transportation team, Perry Emergency Ambulance, and the staff at the Oak Lodge at the Batavia VA for all the care given to Gene and his family.
