Andrew Macko, age 63, of Nunda, NY passed away peacefully on April 3, 2023 in Dansville, NY.
He was born on October 24, 1959 in Greenville, SC a son to the late Maj. John and Dorothy Caroline (Kruppa) Macko. Andrew lived in South Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York.
Andrew was challenged from birth with Downs syndrome and outlived the majority of his peers. He learned to read and write and do simple math. He loved to write and would spend hours meticulously printing his thoughts on a yellow pad. He was in the Boy Scouts, went camping and achieved the rank of Star Scout, which is very close to Eagle Scout.
He worked at and attended program at Doty in Geneseo shredding papers and was the recycling ambassador for the facility earning pay raises because his productivity exceeded expectations.
Andrew loved Elvis Presley, which took him to Graceland and Elvis competitions, which he loved to critique, watching John Wayne movies, which took him to dude ranches and, in his later years, he was never seen without his beloved Spider-Man. Andrew was quite social always, talking to people around him. Anyone who knew him remembers his smile.
Most of all, Andrew loved eating, always being the last one to leave the table. A favorite spot was Tom Wahls in Avon where Andrew would spend an afternoon enjoying a cheeseburger, root beer and a banana split. Andrew bragged that an employee had told him that he had the record for banana splits… true or not, Andrew believed it and his face would light up with his great smile and a “how about that?”
Andrew had a full life and left the world a better place.
He is survived by siblings: John (KJ) Macko (FL), Stephen (Fay) Macko (VA), Mary Anne (Michael Hamilton) Macko (PA), Joseph (Marie) Macko (NY), Susan Macko (NY), sister-in-law: Sharon Macko (PA), along with many nieces, nephews and his extended family at Creekside IRA in Nunda and his former IRA homes in Warsaw, Mount Morris, Dansville, Perry and 20 plus years at E. Avon. The family is exceedingly and eternally grateful to the staff at all the homes where Andrew lived for the care they provided Andrew over these many years, especially in his final days and their 24/7 vigil.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
Andrew will be laid to rest between his parents in the Immaculate Conception Cemetery in Franklin, NJ.
